Fred Bickford is recognized across Northwestern Ontario as a leading counsel in labour, employment and administrative law. Fred has expertise in all aspects of unionized and non-unionized workplaces and is active before all labour and employment-related tribunals, as well as human rights and administrative tribunals. More than 55 of his cases have appeared in various national legal report journals. He has argued cases at all levels of court in Ontario (including the Court of Appeal), in Manitoba before the Court of Queen's Bench and Court of Appeal, as well as the Supreme Court of Canada. In the public sector, his clients include health care and social service organizations, First Nations and a post-secondary educational authority. Private sector clients include major forest, mining and industrial corporations in Northern and Southern Ontario. He has acted for federal and provincial government departments and agencies. He is a member of the Editorial Board and the Editor-in-Chief to Management Rights, which is published by Federated Press, a prestigious national publication devoted to labour relations issues pertaining to employers. Fred is a past Alternate Chair of the Ontario Review Board.
In 1997, The Law Society of Upper Canada designated Fred as a Certified Specialist (Labour Law). In 2008 Fred was appointed to the Certified Specialist Board, part of the Professional Development and Competence Committee of The Law Society of Upper Canada. The 10-member Board is composed of lawyers from across Ontario who establish standards for, and approval policies relating to the certification of lawyers as specialists.
Prior to his legal career, Fred was an officer in the Canadian Armed Forces, serving in a Signal Squadron and in an Airborne Infantry Battalion. He has a Master of Arts degree in Political Science from the University of Manitoba and graduated with a law degree from Queen's University.
Fred is a member of the Thunder Bay Law Association, and is an elected representative of the Ontario Bar Association for Northwestern Ontario. He has completed a second two-year term on the Ontario Branch Labour Relations Section Executive of the Canadian Bar Association. He is also a member of the Knights of Columbus, and has served as President and Legal Adviser to the Fort William District Council of Scouts Canada.
