John Cyr advises business, institutional, mining exploration and aboriginal clients on a broad range of issues. He is particularly useful in negotiating agreements and drafting related documentation. He also assists in risk management including the development of bylaws and policies. Through experience, he has gained practical insight into the challenges facing public sector organizations, such as conflict of interest and confidentiality.
Although one who believes that going to Court should be regarded as a failure in negotiation, John is nevertheless a capable litigator.
John is also interested in Mediation, Arbitration and other forms of Alternative Dispute Resolution.
Clients appreciate John's good judgment and discretion, as well as his analytical and communication skills. He is known for his superior attention to detail and excellent organizational ability.
After teaching for some years, John returned to Queen's University to take his law degree. He was called to the Ontario Bar in 1980 and has been a member of Weiler, Maloney, Nelson since that time. He guided the firm as Managing Partner from 1988 to 1999, but with a successor in place, now enjoys the full-time practice of law.
John holds a B V rating by Martindale Hubbell. He is also designated by The Law Society of Upper Canada as a Certified Specialist (Corporate and Commercial).
John is a member of the Advocate's Society, the Ontario Bar Association and the Thunder Bay Law Association. Among his various volunteer activities, John has served as a Director on the Board of St. Joseph's General Hospital in various roles, including Board Chair, the Executive Committee of the Thunder Bay Law Association as both member and President and, most recently, the Board of the Thunder Bay Community Foundation both as a Trustee and Board Chair. He continues to volunteer his time as a member of the Financial Advisory Committee of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Thunder Bay.
